With an area of just over two square kilometers, Monaco is the <b>second-smallest country in the world<\/b>.<\/p><p>To address this challenge, two main strategies were implemented:<\/p><ol><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>building higher<\/b> and higher;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>extend our territory to the sea<\/b>, as with Mareterra.<\/li><\/ol><p>In fact, Mareterra is the<b> eighth maritime expansion in Monaco\u2019s history<\/b>! For example, in the 1960s, Larvotto Beach became the first artificial beach in the Mediterranean.<\/p><p>Today, the Mareterra district represents <b>six hectares reclaimed from the sea<\/b>, increasing the Principality&#8217;s surface area by 3% to 208 hectares. It offers a variety of spaces and facilities:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Housing options<\/strong> that we will discuss in more detail later (houses, villas, apartments, etc.);<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">A large <strong>park<\/strong> called \u201cLa Pin\u00e8de\u201d;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">A <strong>walk<\/strong> along the seashore;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">A <strong>promenade<\/strong> that connects the various locations in the neighborhood;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">A <strong>marina<\/strong> with 16 berths, nicknamed \u201cLe Petit Portier\u201d;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">An <strong>underground parking garage<\/strong>;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Shops<\/strong>;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\">And even a storage facility for <strong>Monaco&#8217;s museums<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><p>A distinctive feature of the neighborhood is that <b>traffic is largely restricted to pedestrians<\/b>, offering a rare sense of tranquility in an urban setting. It\u2019s even a first for the principality\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourazur.com\/en\/the-monaco-grand-prix-a-circuit-like-no-other\/\">Monaco Grand Prix<\/a> takes place right on the streets here!<\/p><p><b>\ud83d\udca1Did you know? When <\/b>Mareterra was created, the boundaries of <strong>the Japanese garden<\/strong> were altered, and a new pagoda, built in a traditional Japanese style, was It was announced in 2013 and was completed in 2024. <\/p><p>First, Italian architect <b>Renzo Piano<\/b> led the design of the iconic &#8220;Le Renzo&#8221; building, which evokes the silhouette of a ship.  <\/p><p>Next, the French firm <b>Valode &#038; Pistre<\/b> developed the master plan for Mareterra, organizing the neighborhood into different zones, including the \u201cJardins d\u2019Eau\u201d and the \u201cColline.\u201d They designed buildings using natural materials and ensured a <b>balance between urban density and green spaces<\/b>.  \u200b<\/p><p>Finally, French landscape architect <b>Michel Desvigne<\/b> orchestrated the design of the green spaces, which cover almost 50% of the district&#8217;s surface area. He recreated a <b>natural Mediterranean landscape<\/b>, with Aleppo pines, cypresses and native species. On the other hand, the project was built with a <b>clear environmental conscience<\/b>. <\/p><p>Scientists, marine biologists and ecosystem experts were mobilized to ensure the best possible preservation of local biodiversity. The previous, more ambitious project was refused by Prince Albert II himself, as it did not meet the Principality&#8217;s ecological requirements. <\/p><p>Among the measures put in place: the creation of <b>marine corridors and fish habitats<\/b>, as well as the astonishing work carried out on the giant caissons that form the base of the site. Their facades have been grooved by hand, to facilitate the establishment of marine life on these artificial surfaces. As C\u00e9line Caron Dagioni, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Planning, sums up:    <\/p><p>&#8220;We know that the seas are in a bad way and that they need to be protected. A pretty round stained-glass window indicates its location. All you have to do is enter the space, then push open the metal door to find yourself high up, some ten metres above the sea. <\/p><p>To understand what the Grotte Bleue is, it&#8217;s important to remember that Mareterra rests on an artificial floor made up of concrete caissons. The Grotte Bleue is a ten-metre-deep<b> opening<\/b> into <b>one of these caissons<\/b>. <\/p><p><b>\ud83d\udca1Did you know?  <\/b>The Blue Grotto was not included in the initial project. The walls are entirely lined with crystals, notably <b>rose quartz<\/b>. A<b> skylight<\/b> in the ceiling lets in natural light, illuminating the space and accentuating the reflections of the crystals.  <\/p><p><b>\ud83d\udca1Did you know?  <\/b>The artist was keen to find a balance in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Monaco. The result was the creation of an enclosed space, isolated from the hustle and bustle outside, like a sacred cave, a territory.
