Since then, it has flowed beneath the city center, definitively linking the two parts of Nice and freeing up new building land.<\/p><ul><li><strong>1820s<\/strong>: Nice was under the domination of the Kingdom of <strong>Sardinia<\/strong>, which encouraged the city&#8217;s beautification and modernization.<\/li><li><strong>1830s-1840s<\/strong>: the <strong>Consiglio d&#8217;Ornato<\/strong> (town-planning authority) endeavors to put this political will into practice, and adopts architect <strong>Joseph Vernier<\/strong>&#8216;s project.<\/li><li><strong>1860<\/strong>: completion of work to mark the visit of Emperor Napoleon III.<\/li><li><strong>1867-1881<\/strong>: progressive covering of the Paillon. Place Charles-Albert, on the left bank, is absorbed.
