In ancient times, <\/span><b>Cemenelum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a Roman city in its own right. It was home to : <\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman baths (the ruins of which can still be seen near the archaeological museum), <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an amphitheatre (today&#8217;s Cimiez Arena), <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homes.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, on the coast, another city existed: <\/span><b>Nika\u00efa <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Greek origin, which served mainly as a commercial port.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants gradually moved from Cemenelum to Nika\u00efa.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cimiez enjoyed its heyday during the <strong>Belle \u00c9poque<\/strong> (from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the First World War), when it became a favorite vacation spot for the kings and queens of Europe: Victoria, Edward VII, George V and Leopold II all stayed at Cimiez, and several streets in the town
