How do I get to Château Hill?

Walk up

The hill has several entrances. The various stairways are called “ascents.”

1️⃣ The Lesage Climb, considered the main staircase. It is located at the intersection of Rue des Ponchettes and Quai des Etats-Unis, next to the elevator we’ll discuss later. It has 288 steps.

2️⃣ The Castle Hill It begins at the intersection of Rue Saint-Joseph and Montée Auguste Kerl. From there, you reach Allée François Aragon, which leads, among other places, to the Château Cemetery. The slope is much gentler than that of Montée Lesage.

3️⃣ After turning onto Jouan Nicola Street, take the up the hill Menica Rondelly to reach Allée François Aragon.

4️⃣The staircase at the intersection of Montée Montfort and Montée Eberlé.

💡Tour Azur’s Tip : For those who like to explore at their own pace, visiting Nice on foot makes it easy to get from the hill to the harbor and the old town.

Take the elevator

At the intersection of Rue des Ponchettes and Quai des Etats-Unis, you can take an free for free. The ride takes about 1 minute. But our customers say it doesn’t always work!

💡Tour Azur’s tip : Take the elevator up and walk back down.

Traveling by Car: Directions and Parking

Please note that you’ll have to finish the climb on foot, since cars can’t go any higher than the cemetery!

Passing behind the port, via Place Guynemer, take Montfort Hill and then Eberlé Hill. This will bring you to the paid outdoor parking lots around the cemeteries (Allée des Justes or Allée François Aragon).

💡Tour Azur’s Tip : These parking lots are small and very crowded. Feel free to park further down the road. We recommend the Saleya Parking Lot, located near the flower market, just a few minutes’ walk from the elevator and the main staircase. You can also choose the Port Lympia Parking Lot, which is a little farther away but convenient if you want to combine your visit with a walk along the harbor or the Mont Boron neighborhood.

You can also take the little tourist train and its ‘Panoramic Castle Tour’:

  • departure from in front of the Centenary Monument,
  • open every day,
  • timetables vary depending on the season,
  • single tickets can be purchased at the train departure point or online,
  • no bookings accepted.

Accessibility for strollers and wheelchairs

That’s certainly possible if you take the elevator or park your car near the cemetery.

Food and drink

A free drinking water fountain is available in the park. If you fancy a break, you’ll find the Lou Casteu snack bar at the top of the hill, as well as another snack bar next to the nursery, near a souvenir shop.

Public toilets (€0.50) are also available and are equipped with a nappy-changing table.

Practical Information to Help You Plan Your Visit

Hours of Operation

The park is open every day of the year, but hours vary by season:

  • From April through September, it is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • From October through March, hours are reduced to 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

We recommend that you check the schedules on the City of Nice website, especially in the event of unusual weather conditions. Last admission is 15 minutes before closing time.

How much time should I allow?

Plan on one to two hours to explore the waterfall, enjoy the scenic viewpoints, and take a leisurely stroll through the park.

This duration is approximate: add the time needed to reach the park, depending on your starting point and your chosen mode of transportation.

When is the best time to visit Château Hill?

The Castle Hill reveals all its magic during the golden hours :

  • This morning, the light is soft and the hill is still peaceful—perfect for a leisurely stroll away from the crowds.
  • At the end of the day, the sunset transforms the view of the Baie des Anges into an unforgettable spectacle: the colors blaze, the city gradually lights up, and the atmosphere becomes almost poetic.

💡Tour Azur’s Tip : In the summer, it’s ideal to stop by between noon and 3 p.m., as this spot is a true oasis of coolness. In the winter, aim for midday to enjoy the best light and more pleasant temperatures.

What is there to see on Château Hill?

The Waterfall

Entirely man-made, it was created in the 19th century in the spirit of the “Romantic gardens ” of the time, which blended nature, ruins, and grottoes.
It is fed by the Vésubie Canal, but does not always operate.

💡Tour Azur’s tip: Our guests think it’s very pretty up close, but prefer to admire it from a distance to see the whole thing!

All around, the trails wind through the pines, laurel trees, and olive trees, offering numerous viewpoints and shady spots. Some paths lead to secret, less-traveled lookout points where you can enjoy the panoramic view in complete tranquility.

Historical Remains

If the castle that gave the hill has been gone for more than three centuries, its ruins continue to attract curious visitors. The site features informational signs that put each element into context and allow visitors to imagine what this tumultuous past was like.

In 2021, the hill was the subject of major archaeological excavations; you can watch videos of these on this website.

💡Tour Azur’s tip: Take a guided tour to better appreciate the nuances of this little-known but fascinating site. Tour Azur offers exactly this type of service.

The Bellanda Tower and the Bellandarium

This tiny museum, located in the Bellanda Tower, traces the history of Nice through the history of its old castle. However, it is only open on Saturdays.

💡A fun fact about Tour Azur: The Bellanda Tower actually dates back to the 19th century as well, and like the waterfall, it embodies the ideal of a “ romantic garden.” It’s still very pretty to look at from the outside.

The Castle Cemetery

The Château de Nice cemetery is undoubtedly the most beautiful in the city! It features some truly incredible tombs. Right next to it is the Jewish cemetery, where Goscinny, the author of Asterix and Obelix, is buried, among others.

⏲️It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. in the summer).

Discover the stunning hilltop villages of the French Riviera

Why not leave the coast behind and explore Gourdon, Èze, and Saint-Paul-de-Vence? Three hilltop villages, three distinct atmospheres, and, above all, spectacular views of the Mediterranean and the hinterland.

The Park

La Colline du Château isn’t just a magnet for lovers of historic buildings and panoramic views—it’s also an ideal playground for families.

Some benches are scattered throughout the park, offering a place to rest in the shade, and fountains provide a chance to cool off.

The City of Nice has completed renovation work on the playground, which covers 1,600 square meters:

  • planting of plants,
  • Add a wooden castle,
  • Addition of a tower to complete therange of play equipment for children with limited mobility,
  • artificial turf that meets the standards for playgrounds.

Views of Nice and the Baie des Anges

From the summit of the Château Hill, you can see all of Nice: the perfect curve of the Baie des Anges, the ochre rooftops of Old Nice, the Port Lympia on one side, and the airport in the background on the other. At sunrise or sunset, the view is breathtaking. This is where postcards come to life.

What’s truly amazing is that no matter where you are on the hill, there’s always a view to enjoy!

Are you participating in a sporting event in Nice?

Nice regularly hosts major sporting events, such as the IRONMAN. For participants traveling with their own equipment, Tour Azur can arrange transportation for athletes and their gear, including bicycles.

Why is there no longer a castle on Castle Hill?

The hill was the original settlement site of ancient “Nikaïa” and was home to the first medieval town of Nice. Gradually, the inhabitants moved down to the area below, which is now the Old Town.

Before it became a park, the Colline du Château was a citadel, destroyed in 1706 by order of Louis XIV. Only a few remnants remain today, but its historical legacy is evident everywhere:

  • old ramparts,
  • ruins of St. Mary’s Cathedral,
  • Roman necropolis…

As you walk along its trails, you’ll journey through centuries of Nice’s history. A series of informational signs are placed along the route to help you better understand the strategic importance of this site, which was long considered the military key to the city.

💡Tour Azur’s tip: If you’re interested in cultural heritage, we highly recommend the Cimiez neighborhood in Nice, or the Rocher in Monaco.
