Gourdon is one of the charming hilltop villages of the French Riviera, such as Saint-Paul-de-Vence or Èze-Village. Gourdon is located in the Alpes-Maritimes Department (06), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region.
It is located at an elevation of 760 meters and overlooks the Loup Valley, which earned it the nickname “Eagle’s Nest.” It is the second-largest top of the hilltop villages of the French Riviera, after Sainte-Agnès.
It is located inland, roughly equidistant from Nice (31 km) and Cannes (39 km).

The medieval village and its shopkeepers
The heart of the village forms a small maze of narrow, winding alleys, lined with stone houses and numerous shops. Here, you don’t need a program!
The crafts holds a prominent place in the village. For example, you can:
- take a detour through La Marquisette, which specializes in gingerbread,
- Discover the work of the glass,
- Let yourself be guided by the scents of the perfume shops.
Some places also offer the chance to discover more unexpected skills.
At the Saut du Loup Distillery, you can watch a demonstration of artisanal distillation.
Over at Ébénisterie Priolo, a master craftsman and art workshop, woodworking takes center stage.
Fans of art can step inside the Fantino Gallery, while Pépin, a designer boutique, offers jewelry, clothing, and other lovely finds.
💡 Tip from Tour Azur : To discover a completely different side of Gourdon, take Rue de César, which runs parallel to the Grande Rue. This little corner of the village largely flies under the radar of visitors. The reason is quite simple: there are no shops here, just houses.
The Castle
Perched at the very top of the village, it plays a major role in creating the silhouette of a hilltop fortress that comes into view as soon as you arrive.
Its origins date back to the 9th century, and the estate is also known for its classical gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre.
Don’t go looking for the entrance to visit it, though: the castle and its gardens are now entirely private and are no longer open to the public. So we’ll just have to admire them from the outside as we stroll through the village.
The estate has been converted into a vacation rental and a venue for receptions, ceremonies, and seminars.
The Cave Fortress
Its name is a bit misleading: don’t expect to find a real fortress with ramparts and towers! Located on the Cavillore Plateau, at an elevation of about 920 meters, the site is actually the ruins of a former cave dwelling.
On site, one can notably see a fortified gate and, a little further on, the remains of the stone vault of an old oven.
💡 Tip from Tour Azur : The fortress is accessible only on foot via a difficult hike over rocky terrain. A rope handrail helps you steady yourself on a challenging section of the trail. The final few meters of the approach are particularly steep and pose a danger to children.
The Lookout at Victoria Square
If there’s one place in Gourdon where you should definitely take the time to stop, it’s Place Victoria. From its lookout point, the view opens up to a vast stretch of the French Riviera: Nice, the Lérins Islands, the Estérel…
Three orientation tables help you put names to the hills and landscapes unfolding before you. But, let’s be honest, you mostly spend long minutes simply enjoying the view.
And if you suddenly see a colorful canopy glide across the landscape, don’t be surprised: paragliders are soaring just below.
The square is named after Queen Victoria, who visited Gourdon in 1891.
Saint Vincent Church
Saint-Vincent Church, in the Romanesque style, is worth a quick detour during your visit to the village. What makes it special? It was built directly on the rock, giving it a rather unusual.
The Saint-Vincent Chapel
The Saint-Vincent Chapel is located a little over 1 km northwest of Gourdon, away from the town center. Now decommissioned, it sits along a hiking trail.
So you won’t come across it while strolling through the village’s narrow streets; it’s really meant for hikers.
💡 Not to be confused with the Saint-Vincent Church, which is located in the village: despite their nearly identical names, these are indeed two different buildings.
Gourdon Village Seasonal Market
In the summer, a market featuring local farmers’ market is held every Sunday morning in front of the castle entrance. A pleasant little stop to discover some local products while enjoying the village atmosphere.
Art Exhibitions at the City Hall Gallery

The Waterfalls of the Gorges du Loup
The Loup River is dotted with several waterfalls and rapids, which you can explore as you travel through the gorges.
Among the most impressive ones, we recommend two:
- The Waterfall Courmes Waterfall It drops more than 40 meters. It’s located right along the roadside, but be careful: you can’t stop there because there’s no parking, and the site is considered dangerous.
- A little further on, the Saut du Loup is a private site built around several natural attractions. From the lookout point, you can see the Grande Marmite, an impressive basin carved out by erosion, as well as the Demoiselles Waterfalls and the Pétrifiantes. Access to the Saut du Loup is via a small trail that requires a fee (€1); it is open year-round from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with entry through an automatic turnstile. Since the site is a protected area, swimming and pets are prohibited.

Hiking
Path to Paradise
Its origin is more surprising than you might imagine! In the past, Le Bar-sur-Loup didn’t have a cemetery, so the deceased had to be transported to Gourdon to be buried there.
At the time, this trail was the only way in, which is how it is said to have gotten its name, “Path to Paradise.”

It forms a lovely loop above Gourdon. The route allows you to follow a ancient Roman road, and explore the ruins of the Saint-Vincent Chapel and catch a glimpse of the troglodyte fortress.

Grasse

Its old village consists of a charming network of narrow streets, arched passageways, and stone houses. Tourrettes is also known for the cultivation of violet, which has become one of the village’s symbols.
How do I get to Gourdon?
By car
The car is still the easiest way to get to Gourdon. You can take the following routes:
- the D6 from Le Bar-sur-Loup ;
- the D3 from Châteauneuf-Grasse.
Once you arrive, cars are not allowed in the village, except for local residents. There are two free parking lots nearby:

From there, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to the heart of the village.
By bus
Gourdon is served by the 651 Grasse-Vence bus line, a good alternative if you want to visit the village without a car.
By train or by plane
🚆 By train: Gourdon does not have a train station. You can get to Grasse by train from Cannes, then continue your journey on No. 651 bus to Gourdon.
✈️ By plane: The most convenient airport is Nice Côte d’Azur. If you’re coming from Marseille, this is theMarseille-Provence Airport.

Where to stay in Gourdon?
Accommodation options are limited in the village. It may therefore be easier to stay in a neighboring town.
If you’re traveling without a car, it’s best to choose accommodations located along the route of bus line 651. You can also choose to stay at Nice or Antibes, which offer many more options.

It all depends on how you want to get here!
Gourdon is a hilltop village, and its seclusion is part of its charm. The roads leading to it are winding, and there is little public transportation.
And back in the day, getting to Gourdon was a much greater adventure! In the early 20th century, to reach Pont-du-Loup, you had to take the Chemin du Paradis on the back of a mule.
