Why visit the Musée de la Gendarmerie in Saint-Tropez?

Simply because it’s a unique museum.

This atypical venue will enchant movie buffs with its immersive exhibits. The reconstitution of a cinema dedicated to the Gendarmes series is particularly successful.

Beyond the saga itself, the museum highlights the town of Saint-Tropez, which has become a cultural and cinematographic mecca.

Finally, the museum is interactive and accessible to all. Playful areas allow visitors to immerse themselves in 60s settings, use a typewriter, sit on a gendarme’s motorcycle or handle retro accessories.

💡Good to know: It’s the perfect place for families, with free admission for children under 12.

The history and origins of the Musée de la Gendarmerie et du Cinéma

The museum offers 2 trails, one dedicated to the real history of this gendarmerie and the other to the history of cinema in Saint-Tropez.

From barracks to museum

The building that now houses the Museum was for many years the actual barracks of the Saint-Tropez gendarmerie brigade, from 1879 until 2003.

What’s more, it has left its mark on the history of cinema, becoming a filming location for the famous Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez saga.

The idea of transforming this former barracks into a museum was born in 2012, with a view to preserving and celebrating its dual historical and cinematic heritage. A first exhibition was held there in summer 2014.

This event, which notably welcomed three of the famous “gendarmettes”, Babeth, Catherine Serre and Nicaise Jean-Louis, laid the foundations for what was to become a must-see museum, which finally opened in June 2016.

The role of cinema in the museum's popularity

It was during the inter-war years that film directors began to set up their cameras in Saint-Tropez on a regular basis. Works such as Jean Choux’s La Servante in 1930 and Jean Godard’s Pour un soir in 1931 bear witness to this period, when Saint-Tropez was gradually emerging as a place of inspiration for the cinema.

The real turning point came in 1964 with Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez, directed by Jean Girault. This film, the first of a saga of six unforgettable comedies, catapulted the town and its former gendarmerie into the limelight. The Gendarmes series consolidated the image of Saint-Tropez as a place of lightness and humor.

  • The second is an introduction to the history of cinema in Saint-Tropez and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region;
  • The third is a reconstruction of a movie theater and is dedicated to the Gendarmes saga;
  • The fourth presents the different professions involved in the film industry.

Then, on the second floor, you’ll find a number of different areas:

  • The second is devoted to the cultural and festive approach to cinema in Saint-Tropez;

The Gendarmes de Saint-Tropez film room

This is undoubtedly the museum’s most emblematic area, where a retro cinema room has been recreated, entirely dedicated to the Gendarmes saga and its hero, Louis de Funès.

The six films are featured, as well as the screenplay for the seventh film, which was never shot: The Gendarme and the Emperor.

💡Did you know? You can buy this script, written by Robert Balducci and illustrated with a storyboard, at the museum store.

Emblematic objects and gendarmerie costumes

You’ll discover a replica of a gendarme’s office from the 60s, and can even type on a typewriter. Admire the famous costume worn by actress Nicaise Jean-Louis in the film Le gendarme et les gendarmettes. You can also ride a gendarme’s motorcycle or pick up a typical telephone of the era, where you’ll hear a well-known line.

Memories of cinema and the history of Saint-Tropez

At the museum, you’ll also benefit from a much broader perspective on cinema on the Côte d’Azur.

Discover over 70 cult films shot in and around Saint-Tropez, including Et Dieu… créa la femme, L’année des méduses and La Piscine.

The museum’s permanent exhibition features exclusive interviews with actors and witnesses from films shot in Saint-Tropez.

And what could be more immersive than driving along Route Nationale 7, the symbol of vacations and paid leave?
